Script

Final Script

[Guitar followed by cheers]

[Music: Taylor Swift, You Belong With Me]

Narrator: Welcome to Drew Taylor’s Short Rise to Fame. This is the incredible story of a young girl who dared to fight for her dreams.

Drew: I always wanted to be a professional singer.

N: From as soon as she could lift a guitar Drew was hooked on her music and dreamed of a life on stage.

D: I got my first guitar when I was twelve years old and I haven’t stopped playing since. At school I was always picked on for being the short kid and I didn’t do much sport and if you didn’t do much sport you weren’t cool so I used to sneak off and play music instead.

N: Join us through this documentary as we witness how she became such a huge pop sensation and discover what truly inspired her to be where she is today.

[Music: Taylor Swift, Love Story]

Young Drew: I love Christmas, and merry Christmas to you too!

N: Drew grew up in a small town in Hertfordshire and lived in a house with her mum, her dad and her younger sister. Though she had many good friends at school Drew was often bullied because she was not only small but she wanted to do something that people thought was impossible.

Lucy: Drew and I have been friends for years; we met on the first day of secondary school and it became obvious quite quickly that music was such a big part of her life, so when the auditions came around we were both incredibly excited on that day and I remember staying outside just waiting for her and I could hear her sing and it was just amazing. When it finished she came out and she was practically crying and she just wrapped her arms around my neck and she just shouted “I’m through!” I knew that was the start of her life.

[Music: Taylor Swift, Fifteen]

N: A month after winning the X-factor drew released her debut single.

N: Inspired by her own personal experience of secondary school she wrote the song Fifteen.

Meg: So when was the last time you were here?

D: The last time I was here was when I was about sixteen and I was here to film a music video for Fifteen, which was my first single. That was pretty exciting because my own school allowed me to shoot it and that made the whole experience a lot more real for me, it allowed me to connect with all of my memories of school.

[Music: Gabrielle Aplin, Waking Up With You]

M: So what else inspired you?

D: I listened to a lot of folk and indie and country music, people like Gabrielle Aplin, Ben Howard, Ed Sheeran and people like that really inspired me.

M: Why were they so important to you?

D: I think because they wrote about life and that kind of got me through what I was going through. And they really inspired me to get my inspiration from life as well.

N: As time passed more and more people were falling in love with the young country singer and being inspired by her remarkable self-confidence.

Patrice: {French accent} When I first saw her I did not know what to make of her. I was quite apathetic and not particularly interested. But then she began to sing and I thought no this is different from the person I met before; she was vibrant and alive, expressing everything that she held inside her for her music. That is what makes her special. Her first audition was something special; it was like a moment in a movie or the television. I could not believe it, it was a once in a lifetime moment for someone in my career. She was exceptional.

[Music: Taylor Swift, Fearless]

P: Her music video, Fearless, I think epitomises the lack of fear; lack of inhibition she has when she is singing. It changes her, she is different beyond recognition.

N: Three years after her first audition, Drew released her most recent single Fearless; inspired by an old romance and her everlasting love of music.

Production Diary 6

On Tuesday 12th we began to plan our last shoot, with a month left to film there should be ample time for us to plan and record the last 30 or so seconds and also finalise the script for the voiceover and record it.

Production Diary 5

Today my group and I went to the Priory to film what should have been filmed in half term. The last bits of footage filmed are miscellaneous footage from a music video that will be used to pad out our project and fill in what we feel is lacking. Due to muddy ground and slippery leaves everywhere extra caution had to be taken when setting up the camera as it could have easily slipped into the adjacent river. To the right and below are some pictures that Dan took of myself operating the camera and Gemma in position.

Half Term Update

During the week off school we were planning to record the final bits of footage for our documentary. Dan was going away on holiday so I was in charge of looking after all of the equipment. However no progress could be made due to stormy weather and myself being ill. We plan to make up for the lost time this coming Thursday.

Costume Update

Because some characters have been wiped from our project and new characters have been added there has been a development in costume. Drew's costume has stayed the same as just a casual top and skirt.

The manager has a more campy character however and his costume reflects this, he will be dressed in a flannel shirt and tartan pyjama bottoms with sunglasses on.

The interviewer that we have filmed is a very casual character and the actress(Meg) was allowed to supply her own clothing, which took the form of a shirt and jeans.

Drew's childhood friend(Lucy) was also allowed to supply her own clothing and wore a casual outfit of shirt and jeans also.

Demographics & Psychographics(TBC)

The demographics for our production are as follows:

Age: Teenagers & young adults

Gender: Female

Social Class: All

Social group: Secondary school/College/Uni students

Employment: None in particular

Ethnicity: All

Psychographics: Spectators, Joiners

Characters Update (TBC)

Throughout our project the characters that would be in it have changed. We no longer have 4 judges nor do we have an interviewer. However now we have a few more people playing fans, we also have Drew's manager.

First Cut

Tuesday 22nd was the deadline for our first cut, which can be seen below, however due to technical difficulties it could not be shown, Dan took it home and exported it on his laptop and it will be shown today.

Production Diary 4

On Sunday 20th Meg, Dan, Gemma and I went to Hertford to try and do some filming for our documentary. Unfortunately the weather was horrible so no filming could be done, but we decided to have fun in Hertford anyway. Attached are some photos.

Production Diary 3

On Monday the 15th we went to Gemma's house to film some interviews. We set these interviews in her bedroom and we just recorded separate lines of dialogue from Gemma as though she were replying to questions. The day went fine once we got started but while we were recording we were interrupted several times by construction work going on outside Gemma's back garden, which led to a lot of re-takes. To the right and below are some photos from the shoot.

Production Diary 2

On Wednesday the 9th of October Dan, Lucy and I went to the school open evening and made some progress editing our production. We did as much as we could with the footage that we had but ultimately not much progress was made other than general improvements.

Production Diary 1

On Tuesday 24th we began filming in the school hall. It was difficult to get things to look good but eventually after many takes we came away with footage that was serviceable. I also recorded my own role as the voice over.

To the right are some pictures from the recording session that we had in the hall. Below are some clips from my voice over.

Costume

For our production we have been thinking about the costume for our characters. The two main characters are Drew Taylor(Gemma Crane) and the interviewer(Meg McMillan). Any other characters will be able to wear whatever they want to.

Because Drew Taylor is based on real life singer Taylor Swift we decided that her costumes should parallel her real life counterpart. This means tartan/check shirts, jeans and boots or shoes - a generally casual ensemble. Below is a picture of the style of outfit Gemma will be wearing.

I myself will not have a costume as my role in the production will not be on screen.

Shedule

Below is the production schedule for our production.
The deadline for our first cut is October 21st and the final deadline is December 2nd, by which time all filming and editing should be complete and the product will be ready for viewing.

A2 Animatic

In planning our A2 production we had to make an animatic, to do this we drew a large copy of our storyboard and individually photographed each frame before editing them in the desired sequence in Adobe Premiere. To convey the general theme of Drew Taylor being a country singer a song by Taylor Swift was dubbed over the animatic.

A2 Pitch

For the A2 project I will be working in a group with Lucy Lewis, Daniel Faint and Megan McMillan. Our production will be a 5 minute documentary called "Drew Taylor: Short Rise to Fame" based on the life of fictional country/pop music singer "Drew Taylor".

Our pitch to the class received some positive feedback but some concerns were raised about our idea to possibly use a green screen to create a short concert scene, which some felt would stand out in a bad way from the authenticity that we are planning to create. An alternative to this shot that we considered in response to the feedback was to use the hall as it has a stage and some equipment that would look authentic.

Knebworth Park Summer Music Video

In preparation for our A2 project we had to go to Knebworth Park in groups to film a music video for a "summer song" of our choice, My group was the same as I worked with in AS being myself, Daniel Faint and Amber Law. We all made suggestions but we settled on Amber's choice of "Move Your Feet" by Junior Senior. On the day of filming however Amber was ill so it was just Dan and I. When filming began the weather was looking bad and we decided to disregard any planning that had been made and we just made it up as we went along. In my opinion this actually worked out really well- especially the intro/outro of us running in/out of the mushrooms.

In the editing stage we put all of the lipsynching in place and then just threw any shots which we felt looked good between the bits, we then splashed some colour efects onto them such as tints and on the clip of me running backwards the footage was sped up and reversed to make it look like I was running backwards. All in all we were rather pleased with what we had edited together but for some unknown reason although it plays perfectly fine in premiere when rendered it simply doesn't export properly and thus this post is just a wall of text.

Evaluation Question 7

Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

For the preliminary exercise(seen to the left) I worked in a group. We had to film a thirty second long short film. The purpose of the film was to test our ability to shoot a short film and edit together footage from multiple camera angles and takes, whilst maintaining the continuity of the piece. During this I learned to make animatics and to look at each individual frame to maximise cut precision so that there are no jump cuts. Doing all of this helped with the actual production by giving experience in planning out the production and putting it all together.

For my production exercise(seen to the left) I worked in a group
with Amber Law and Daniel Faint. We had to film a two minute long opening for a film. While in the preliminary task the purpose was solely to cut in a way which preserves the continuity of events on screen, in the coursework task we had to present the introduction to a story in a professional way. Unlike in the preliminary task we did not use any equipment from school we used Amber's own camera and had a costume made specifically for the production.

There is quite a big difference between the overall quality of each production, we spent alot more time and effort on the coursework task and I feel that it shows quite clearly. The difference in quality can be attributed to a few reasons, such as using a higher standard of camera. Another thing about our coursework task is that it has alot more visual effects edited in to it such as the gamma and speed alterations. In the coursework task the soundtrack is also much more developed, layering music underneath the dialogue whilst the soundtrack of the preliminary task consists of only dialogue and background noise.

Evaluation Question 6

Evaluation Question 6

What have you learned about technologies in the process of constructing your film?

As with all film openings in making our film opening technology has been extensively used.

In the pre-production stage of making our film opening we used technology for research, we used Google chrome to look up other films of a similar genre and production type to give us ideas of where to go with ours and how to get there. We also used chrome to find our music, initially Sam the Sham then Amanda Seyfried and then finally Beethoven(pictured to the right).

In the production stage we used a camera to film our shots and then used a camera from school as a microphone in the cupboard to record the dialogue. We did this because the quality of the microphone was pretty good and the cupboard was well insulated against background noise.

In the post-production stage Adobe Premiere was used to edit the shots into the correct sequence, correct length and to apply effects to make them look as desired. Examples of visual effects being used are the gamma enhancements  used on most shots to make the colours more deep, the black and white filter put over the first few shots and how some of the shots were slowed down or sped up for effect. Another visual thing done in post production was that two shots of Red walking in opposite directions across a bridge are superimposed over each other to make it look as though there are two reds, and when they pass through each other it creates a spooky atmosphere. In audio post production I placed reverb effects on the dialogue, made the music get quieter during the dialogue and I created a left-right separation between the two voices that make up the dialogue. A thing I have learnt about Premiere is how to re-open a sequence in the project after it has been closed.

Evaluation Question 5

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

For a description of our target audience see question 4.

Our product attracts and addresses the target audience in a few ways.

Visually our video has in places had the gamma levels edited to make the colours deeper and has had the speed of some parts changed for dramatic effect. This addresses the audience as it sets the mood of the clip as a psychological thriller/horror and reflects the warped perspective of the titular character Red which gratifies the audiences desire to see a film that is distant from reality. Another way that the visual element of our product has done this is by using a few non-additive dissolve transitions to create a similar effect to the gamma alterations.

Above is an example of a shot where the gamma has been turned up to enhance the colours in the shot. Below to the left is an example of a non-additive dissolve being used to make Red's downhill run seem off and take less time. Below to the right is an example of shots which have been deliberately edited to be jumpy. Both are examples of bits which have had time manipulated, the left having been slowed down and the right having been sped up.

Our video's soundtrack is also used to attract and address the audience. Our music is Ludwig Van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14, specifically the first two minutes in the first movement. We have dialogue between Red(at the moment being played by Amber) and her alter ego(being played by Dan) in which they have a conflict. This establishes the mindset of Red and the differences that she has with her alter ego. This gratifies the aspect of the audience that want to see conflict in a  psychological thriller/horror type film.

This all adds up to attract our target audience as when added together it creates an unusual atmosphere and intrigues the audience into wanting to know more about the story. It is also very clearly not a mass market film and therefore attracts the niche market to view it.

Evaluation Question 4

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your product?

Age - Teenagers and young adults 16-26
Gender - Males and females, however it probably leans more towards females
Other interests - Fairy tales, psychological thriller/horror
Lifestyle - Casual, likes cinema
Class - Anyone with enough money to see a film
Ethnic & religious backgrounds - Unimportant

Evaluation Question 3

Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

Our film is a niche independent film with some involvement from Fox Searchlight pictures. Because our film is such I would imagine that it would be shown at film festivals such as the Sundance film festival or Cannes for a while before getting a public release.

I imagine that our product could also be shown by some of the standard cinemas in the UK such as Cineworld, as well as being shown in smaller cinemas too. I think it could also get to some European cinemas, however I doubt that it would be shown much if at all in cinemas in the Americas or Asia.

The product could also be distributed internationally on DVD and Blu Ray, and if I were to have my way by digital download. DVD/Blu Ray/Digital Downloads could negate the issue of poor cinema going in some nations and help make some money.

Examples of institutions I could imagine distributing our product would be:

  • The British Film Institute
I can imagine the BFI distributing our product as they have backed and distributed hundreds of independant films and also have been known to release DVDs.
  • Vertigo Films
Vertigo Films are a company that has created and distributed independant films, one example of which would be Richard Ayoade's Submarine
  • The BBC
I can see the BBC distributing our product too as they are a British company that has also distributed and funded many smaller films and also distribute DVDs.

Evaluation Question 2

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

As our media product revolves around one character, the titular Red, the number of social groups represented is less than plentiful, there are also not alot of representations of each. However Red herself falls into a couple of social groups.

Most obviously Red is a female. Females are often used as window dressing, they are usually very feminine and attractive and not very hands on. Females are also very commonly the innocent victim or damsel in distress. However Red is not the stereotypical film female, as young and innocent as Red may look outwardly her dark side completely goes against the stereotypical female, being insane and of malicious intent. Red is however also a victim though as the abuse she received as a child is what led to the development of her twisted alter ego. So on the whole females are shown to neither be dainty darlings nor stone cold femme fatales, balanced but by extremes if you will.

Another social group represented in our media product are the mentally challenged. There are two typical representations of the mentally challenged, there are the sweet but dim characters such as Forest Gump and the disturbed and creepy. I would say that Red clearly comes under the latter, as she has a murderous alter ego spawned by domestic abuse from her grandmother.

Evaluation Question 1

Evaluation Question 1

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Challenge:

  • Our main character 'Red' is a young girl, in most people's minds a young girl is typically quite innocent and unspoiled, often quite emotional. In someways the character Red challenges this as even though you could argue that she is quite emotional she is not innocent, she is balls crazy as a result of a traumatic past. I myself can only really think of one other young girl that is quite so crazy and that is 14 year old vigilante Hayley Stark(pictured to the right) from the 2005 film 'Hard Candy' who is also balls crazy.
  • Another convention or form that our product could be seen to challenge is the obvious difference between antagonists and protagonists, generally these two can be differentiated by several physical appearance based stereotypes such as Flash Gordon(protagonist) having blond hair and a shaven face whilst Ming the Merciless(antagonist) is bald with an oriental beard reminiscent of Fu Manchu. Whereas in our product there's really no way to differentiate between antagonist and protagonist in this way as they are both the same person, physically at least.

Use:

  • Our product uses several of the forms and conventions of other media products. The camerawork follows the rule of thirds as to keep the framing of each shot looking professional and well done.
  • Another way that our product follows conventions is by having titles during the opening. Most films ever made have had titles at the start of the film, though there are no doubt some exceptions I cannot name any of them.
  • The way that our titles are done also follows conventions, our product starts with the logos of all the companies that were involved in the production, in our case these are the Heritage Lottery Fund, Fox Searchlight and Terrasomnia. These are then followed by the jobs and people who carried them out during production, such as Dan being credited as editor, over shots in the opening with the director being the last name credited.
  • The font of the titles is also an example of us using the conventions and forms, the font(pictured above) is the same as that of Danny Boyle's '28 Days Later' which is a San-serif typeface which is easy to read, as most titles are done, but with some decorative fading and in our product is coloured a deep red to match the title.
  • Our product uses the traditional use of flashbacks, to provide back story and context to events. Our flashbacks show Red's past and establish the back story to her unstable state of mind.

Develops:

  • At an earlier stage when we had music the music used was a development on the forms and conventions. The first song used was 'Little Red Riding Hood' by Sam the Sham, which is quite a corny sounding country song about Little Red Riding Hood, this was used to create an eerie feel to things. When it was decided that Sam the Sham's version was too corny we changed to Amanda Seyfried's version, which still created the eerie atmosphere but in a different way. I put this under develops as it still achieves the eerie thriller/horror vibe however it does not do it in the traditional way of having slow deep music which suddenly becomes high pitched staccato as is the standard in this genre.

Film Opening Update 11

Film Opening Update 11

Today in lesson I made final adjustments to the audio for our project.

Last lesson we showed the most recent version of our project and due to a speaker being broken only one track of dialogue could be heard by the audience which was a severe flaw in the audio. Even though it was a hardware fault and in no way certain to affect all screenings I decided to make some changes to prevent this kind of event from ruining the audio, to do this I changed the left/right balance on the track containing Dan's dialogue from -100 to -75 and the track containing Amber's dialogue from 100 to 75. Doing this means that both tracks can be heard if one speaker goes down by allowing them some crossover, but not too much of a crossover that the stereo effect is negated.

Since my last edit of the audio a new recording from Dan was added in at the end, because of this it had not had the reverb effect put on it that the other ones had so I had to do that before the final export could be done to maintain consistency. Unlike the other dialogue in the scene I chose to keep this clip neutral in terms of left/right balance as it stands alone and is not part of a greater conversation so making it only play in one ear would not really have any effect on it.

Film Opening Update 10

Film Opening Update 10

Recently I have started doing an overhaul of the audio in the film opening. To start with I cut some of Dan's dialogue as I felt that it started to ramble counter-productively. Then I used the separated Dan's lines from Amber's lines and used the mixer(seen below) to put them into different tracks so that I could make use of stereo-phonics to create effect  by making  Dan's dialogue only play through the left and Amber's play only through the right, the reason I put Amber on the right and Dan on the left is because of the old notion that the right hand is good and the left hand is evil.

After I did this I decided that I wanted to make the music get quieter when there is dialogue as it sounded quite cluttered and obscured the dialogue when it was playing at full. So I rearranged the music into two different tracks as seen below and made the part of the music playing under dialogue quieter and put a fade over the end and start of the adjoining parts of the music so that it gets progressively quieter instead of jumping quieter, which I think is the better way of doing it. I also did the same after the dialogue ends, but instead of making it quieter it returns to its initial volume.

After I had done this I put some reverberation effects over the dialogue to reflect that it is inside Red's head and that the voices are imaginary, Dan's voice being the evil side of Red and Amber's being the good.

Film Opening Update 9

Last Thursday in lesson I recorded Amber's dialogue for our video. Amber and I also stayed after school to get some more work done on the video in which time I fixed the rendering problem where only a certain clip in our video would render and I did some general shot and audio tidying up.

How did you attract/address your audience?

For a description of our target audience see question 4.

Our product attracts and addresses the target audience in a few ways.
